Atollo 237 h 50 is the table lamp made by designer Vico Magistretti in 1977, the one that best sums up his attitude towards designing this type of objects. Atollo is characterized by two elements. First, the composition of simple geometric figures that, in perfect balance and proportion of the whole, seems to translate the memory of the lampshade in a small abstract sculpture. Atollo lights up directly and indirectly, with varying degrees of reflection on the environment. The connection between the carrier and the shell is very thin and it seems almost suspended. The pleasant trick of light enhances and is enhanced by the geometric simplicity of the devise, not disturbed by any complicated detail. This is characteristic of most of the lamps that Magistretti , that with the elegance of proportions and formal composure, propose themselves as the perfect "domestic characters." Finally, the general characteristics of the ' light 'compositions of the Milanese designer : .. Simple geometric figures, which are made in small abstract sculptures ; tricks of light, such as adjusting with a simple movement of two coaxial hemispheres or the close relationship between reflective surfaces and light diffusion. The many lamps designed by Magistretti are a combination of essential shapes and lighting effects. The details , the joints , the attacks are always hidden or mentioned; the balanced composition of the whole prevails, in domestic objects of elegant formal simplicity.
